Ordering seeds and seed catalogs

I've been getting e-solicitations from my favorite seed companies, an excellent sign that days are lengthening, and it will be planting time eventually.  I'm looking forward to the seed catalogs that are waiting at home in the Piedmont (hmm, not that I need any more seeds, but you never know).  There's Garden Fest (with vegetable transplants) to plan for, in addition to my raised beds.

The beds here in the mountains have been totally covered with snow (no overwintering cole crops here this winter!)  And I'm afraid my rosemary, sage, and oregano plants have probably succumbed to the continued cold weather. 

But, they're easily replaced and warmer weather is on the way.

Seedsaving and garlic varieties

I was already familiar with some of the vendors at the Carolina Farm Stewardship's Sustainable Ag conference, but have had fun discovering new sources, and putting faces to some of the familiar names.

It was fun to meet some of the folks from the Southern Exposure Seed Exchange (I've received their catalogs and used some of their seeds for years).

They had a wonderful display of garlic varieties, along with some winter squash. I couldn't help it; I bought more seeds, garlic, and some multiplier potato onions. I want to run home and start planting. (And it's a beautiful day, too, much too nice to spend in the Civic Center...) But....

Another regular display promotes seed exchange between member seed savers. There were lots of jars of different kinds of interesting seeds, with seed envelopes to take small quantities to try in your farm or garden.

Planning to plant

Seed catalogs are a great source of inspiration, especially in the grey days of winter. Here in the South, we often have mild days punctuated by colder weather, so we have plenty of opportunities to spend time outside evaluating new projects and doing prep for late winter and spring planting.

Perusing the stack of seed catalogs, making orders, and considering planting plans are evening and cold day activities, and being someone who loves to buy seeds -- this is a wonderful antidote to cold, dark days inside.

Some of the things I enjoy ordering are beautiful lettuces, unusual squashes, purple pole beans, small striped eggplants, specialty sweet peppers, edible flowers, potato sets in rainbow hues, teeny round carrots, yard-long beans ...
