Marin County Kitchen design

Monday, November 22, 2010

Marin County Kitchen designThomas Wold partnered with Sheryl Drinkwater (architect) and Brad Charlstrom (contractor) to help a young family renovate their kitchen. The client had an unchanged ranch-style home from the 1950s located in Marin County.

Wold worked with the architect and homeowners on developing a new look and function of the kitchen, as well as fabricated and installed the new casework. What resulted was asignature Thomas Wold-style kitchen. If you've seen Wold's work before, then you know what I'm talking about.
The big island integrates seating so the room could be conducive to casual eating and socializing. Overall, the client wanted a youthful feel, so Wold settled on a soft palette of two solid colors to complement the uniformed Anegre veneers plus a neutral white CaesarStone counter. The yellow on the "office" cabinets is only seen in this area to note it's unique function. The area above the fridge is white opaque Plexiglass sliding doors cut with a laser jet.

Understanding Garden & Landscape Design

Tuesday, October 26, 2010

Designing a garden landscape incorporates several professional disciplines including the need for horticulture knowledge, construction expertise, drainage and irrigation expertise, as well as the need to have an extensive knowledge of design principles and how to incorporate them creatively in the overall plans. Landscape design draws on all of these different disciplines to achieve the unity of design which is necessary to create a safe, flourishing and aesthetically pleasing, functional landscape.
Once the designer understands the site, the client’s needs and the budget constraints, the landscape design starts with the creation of a conceptual plan, which is a rough layout of all of the design elements and there location within the site property boundaries and their relationship to the environment and the adjacent land. With the conceptual design drawn, a meeting between the client or client's representative and the landscape designer brings the conceptual design to a greater refinement based on how much in line the design solution is to the client’s desires, the budget and the design elements they wish to see in the final landscape.

Gardening Question of the Week: Winter Care for Trees in Containers

Thursday, October 21, 2010

I received several emails with concerns about what kind of care container trees require, to get them through the winter. Some of the emails were from folks in apartments and their potted trees were also exposed to high winds; a double whammy.

Over-wintering containers takes some experimentation. There are several things to take into account, when growing trees in containers, no matter where you live. First, choose a tree suited to your growing conditions, whether it is sunny, shady, wet or dry. Make sure the tree is hardy to a couple of zones below your USDA hardiness rating. That way it should be able to handle winter temperatures, even though it is above the frost line.

Some less obvious problems include how much to water and too much winter sun. Strong southern exposure sunlight can cause trunks and branches to freeze, thaw and eventually crack, during winter. As for watering, most trees will be dormant during cold winters, so they will need less water. Don't leave them dry for weeks at a time, but do not let them sit in wet soil, or the roots will rot.
Assuming your tree is hardy enough to be outdoors, the biggest consideration will be wind burn and desiccation. You can use burlap to shield the tree, but only consider this in extreme cases. Trees need sunlight, even in winter. If you do need to wrap the tree, don't let the burlap touch the branches and freeze to them. Use some sort of framing to keep a few inches between tree and fabric. A better idea would be to group several plants together and move them to a less windy location for the winter. There are also some good anti-desiccation sprays on the market.

If you are growing several trees as a privacy screen and you won't be able to do much protecting, take extra care in choosing rugged trees, like yew, juniper and viburnum.

And if you've had good luck overwintering a potted tree outdoors, let us know your tips for survival.

A Romantic Bedroom Should Appeal to All Five Senses

Practical tips turn your bedroom into a love nest

(ARA)
 - A romantic bedroom should please all of the senses. To enhance intimacy and comfort, the Better Sleep Council offers tips and advice on how to transform your bedroom into a love nest that appeals to each of your five senses.

1. Touch. The bed is the focus of any bedroom and the most romantic rooms make it as cozy as possible. Luxurious sheets and plush pillows are wonderful, but the real key is a comfortable mattress, so make sure to have one that feels heavenly and caresses both you and your partner.
2. Sight. Lighting should be soft and filtered; bright lights can detract from the ambience. Use lower wattage light bulbs or those with a soft pink hue. And, for special evenings, nothing adds romance like the warm glow of candles (be sure that lit candles are never left unattended).
3. Smell. Gently wiping your light bulbs with a thin coat of perfumed oil can send calming or sensual scents throughout the bedroom. In addition, sprinkling dusting powder on your sheets can make them fragrant and silky. Scented sachets of lavender and rosemary also add to the air of romance.
4. Sound. Keep your favorite CDs at your fingertips; soft music is one of the easiest ways to elevate your mood. If it's noisy outside your bedroom window, hang thick curtains to muffle the sound. A peaceful bedroom retreat is the place to focus on each other, so keep distractions such as the television in another room.
5. Taste. For a late-night indulgence, place strawberries and whipped cream on a small tray next to the bed. Champagne and champagne glasses also are ideal at the start of a romantic evening at home.
"Evaluate your bedroom, starting with the sense of touch, making sure your bed and mattress are as comfortable as possible. Then, consider the rest of the senses. Because a romantic bedroom can set the mood for the evening, don't risk having an uncomfortable bed or a noisy bedroom destroy the moment," says Andrea Herman, director of the Better Sleep Council.

Backyard Furniture and Outdoor Fun

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

Wood patio sets are the ever-popular choice for outdoor furniture. Be it a dining table and chairs set or a traditional porch swing or glider, wood patio furniture provides a uniquely rustic beauty that no other material can match. Many quality woods are used in patio furniture construction. Here is a list of the commonest woods and the advantages they offer.
Cedar
Cedar is probably the most popular wood used in rustic furniture, either indoor or outdoor. Cedar is a magnificent, aromatic wood that contains a natural resistance to rot, insects, and weather. Unfinished or natural cedar will change color as it weathers, from a red-brown to a lovely silver-gray.
Cypress
Cypress wood is known for its durability and natural resistance to insects and rotting. Cypress wood is also very resistant to warping. It is a close-grained wood most commonly used in outdoor furniture. Many people prefer the look of distressed cypress, though an application of white acrylic stain will give your cypress patio set a striking antique-like finish.
Brazilian hardwood
Brazilian cherry is a very beautiful and respected wood. Brazilian cherry, also known as Jatoba, is a dark red-brown wood that is naturally very oily and takes a finish very well. Brazilian cherry is a dense and strong wood often used in flooring, carpentry, and furniture construction.
Pine
Pine is very resistant to weather-related decay and insect damage, and along with cedar is one of the most popular woods for outdoor rustic or patio furniture. Stained pine patio sets are often extremely beautiful. Pine is a naturally knotty wood, which gives it a unique texture many people find visually appealing. It is recommended that owners of outdoor pine patio furniture stain their pieces regularly for continued protection.
Teak
Teak is an extremely durable wood that has been used in shipbuilding and construction for centuries. Teak is a fine-grained wood and one of the most resistant to weather, insects, mildew, and rot. Outdoor teak furniture can be left unfinished and still last for many years.
