Going Green! 5 Simple Ways to Create an Eco-Friendly Kitchen

Friday, July 2, 2010

Ever since Al Gore urged us to be environmentally conscientious in his documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, it seems that everyone is hopping on the band wagon to go green. As I'm sure you know, there are many ways to adopt eco-friendly practices as they pertain to custom home building but for today, I thought I would focus on one area- the kitchen. Below I've listed 5 modifications which can make a big impact without sacrificing quality or style.

  1. For your countertops, choose recycled or natural materials such as recycled glass or formaldehyde free bamboo.
  2. When designing your kitchen, make sure to keep recycling in mind. Custom cabinetry can include a built in space for recycling, making it easy to separate recyclables.
  3. Opt for energy efficient appliances like those from Asko.
  4. Going green can be as easy as changing your light bulbs from incandescent to compact fluorescent.
  5. Going green can also help you live a healthier lifestyle. Choosing paints with low volatile organic compounds (VOC) is better for you and the environment!
